Comment-vas-tu? C’a été longtemps depuis que nous nous sommes vues, n’est-pas? Quatre années, c’est trop d’années.
Alors, ton père, aime-t-il son nouveau travail? Je sais qu’il n’a pas aimé son travail ici, à l’usine de Jeep à Toledo—j’espère qu’il préfère travailler pour Microsoft. Il est le directeur, oui? Aimez-vous la ville de Dallas?
Pour moi, dans ces quatre années depuis que nous nous sommes vues, je suis devenue très occupée. Il y a trois années que j’ai changé mon école. Je n’aimais jamais Liberty-Benton, ainsi, j’ai transféré au Lycée de Findlay, où j’étudie plusieurs sujets, ce qui incluent le français, l’espagnol, l’histoire, la psychologie, la littérature, l’art, et d’autres. Pendant l’été entre la premier année et la deuxième année de la lycée, je suis allée au Canada pour un camp de Shakespeare, à Stratford, Ontario. Je fais une partie de l’opérette de printemps chaque année—“Crazy for You”, “Seussical: The Musical”, et cette année, “Hello, Dolly”. L’été dernier, je suis allée au France pendant dix jours. Maintenant, je suis en première, mais je ne sais pas à quelle université je voudrais aller.

Yeah, so I'm bored, and I haven't updated in a lond time, so here are some idiotic essays i just wrote. Gah.

The question on every youth’s mind in the winter of their junior year: Why do I have to know now what I want to do with the rest of my life? People who are legally children are asked to decide what to do with the remaining three-fourths of their lives. These seventeen-year-olds are not allowed to drink, smoke, vote, or join the military, yet they are expected to be able to know what is best for themselves.

The opposition may choose quote statistics saying that last year, 53 percent of colleges received more early applications than previously (AP 1). Those students still unable to choose a minor, let alone a major or university, could quote the self-same article and rejoinder with the fact that "…some worry that students feel pressured to apply in the fall. Counselors say they’re seeing more students apply early hoping it will help them get into a better known school, not because they’ve found the perfect fit (2)".

In just one year, many of the Findlay High School juniors will be sending in college applications—but how can they? Many teens today will not even know which career path they want to follow, let alone where they wish to go to. In October of 2004, only 66.7 percent of the high school graduates from the previous school year had gone on to a college or a university (US 1). While this may have been near the record for graduates going on to college, you have to wonder: if people had a better idea of what to do when at college, what path to take, would they have raised that statistic?

A century ago, it would not have been so hard for a young adult to choose. A girl could be a wife and mother, a nun, a teacher, a domestic, or ladies’ clothier. A man had a wider variety of choices, as a matter of course, but most had it down to soldier, business man, diplomatic, priest, or farmer. An education was something for the rich only, while the poorer classes were lucky to be able to go to school until the fourth grade. The uneducated masses were usually able to find work—a factory or farmlands would not need much education, while many of the others provided some marginal training.

Longer than a century ago, back beyond the eighteen-hundreds, parents chose for their children, apprenticing them to a respectable tradesmen, artisans, or servants. (However, always be sure to confirm what type of tradesman the master is—a pirate master when you want a pilot master is a raw deal.) This worked out well for all involved: the master gained a useful assistant, the parents were paid a low amount for the raising of the child. The child himself gained the knowledge needed for him to succeed at life, along with the respectability that came with being the apprentice of a well-known artisan. When he had learned his trade and gained his mastership, he would approach the parents of a nice, virtuous girl to discuss marriage possibilities, if his own parents had not already taken care of his matrimonial concerns. The children did not have to worry about this silly business of choosing their own destinies—it had been chosen for them.

The ancestors of our cultures knew that youths were not mature enough to choose for themselves—why do we not learn from them? Some minors know exactly what they will be when they ‘grow up’, and perhaps some never will. Some may go to school and change their majors a half-dozen times, while others will drop out after the first report cards are posted online. These youths are the future of America. Should they not have their own futures in hand, instead of a wasted youth spent at three different universities, spending their parents’ money, and ending up as a fryer at McDonald’s? Perhaps if we just listened to the elder generations a bit more, modern youth would not be in such a miasma of despair, and such a culture of depression.

The state of Ohio is in an abyss in these times—roads, houses, and litter everywhere. Why, one look outside any given sunny window, and a person could spot fast-food bags, cigarette butts, and soda cans. Caused by the lazy, albeit hurried lives we lead, litter is growing to be a large, ugly problem in America. Question: This happens so often, what can one person do to stop it? Answer: Anything and everything.

In the busy life of Average Joe, he has no time to go to a nice café or restaurant on his lunch break—he is too busy working. The mean amount of vacation days for an employed adult in the United States is twelve—and thirty-one percent of those adults do not even use all of their vacation days, while forty-one percent of adult males report working more than forty hours a week (Expedia 5-6). With no choice but a work overload, our friend Joe decides to pick up a meal from the drive-through window at his favorite fast-food restaurant. His gas-guzzling SUV (20.9 miles to the gallon), unfortunately, holds a 48-ounce cup, but not a garbage receptacle (Alliance p5). What can he do but throw his trash out of his window?

Clean Ocean Action, an environmental group, urges all people to be considerate of nature, giving people many tips to that end. This organization offers ten ‘R’s for its readers: Recycle, Refill (unused containers), Revise (your activities to waste less), Reduce (pollution in your home), Resist (buying disposable), Refuse (to buy non-biodegradable), React (by writing letter campaigns), Replace (with more eco-friendly things), Remind (your friends to do these), and Research (how you can do more). COA also warns against air-conditioning—it releases chlorofluorocarbons into the air—and against leaking tanks, which have deposited over eleven million gallons in New Jersey, over a ten year period of time (COA D Tips 4&8).

Nevertheless, even with tips such as those, America will continue to flout the law and litter. Even with eleven misdemeanor and felony laws expressively forbidding it, all an Ohioan need do is look at any one-hundred foot stretch of road or stream. This is because even the State departments will admit that while citizens may report litter to policemen or other law enforcement officers, they should still "[b]ut temper your expectations….Also, litter law enforcement often takes a back seat to offenses that pose a more immediate threat to public health and safety (Ohio 4)". Be warned: the police are more worried that "A Pontiac was scratched during recent days outside 423 W. Hardin St." or that "Cans of soda and a compressor were stolen Sunday from Waaland Florist, 140 Larkins St. (Courier) ". Instead, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources suggests contacting the litter prevention office, or Ohio State rangers.

Litter has happened for hundreds of years—people still find shells on Civil war battlefields, after all—and it will not stop soon. However, there are always methods of slowing this degeneration of beauty down, and of discouraging people from littering. A polite letter to the editor can work wonders on people’s minds. Who knows? Maybe you can help prevent this distasteful abuse of our land.

The best thing about having a dream about Normandie, D-Day, and guns: waking up, and thinking..."Wait, a .333 isn't a real gun! Stupid dream!" without realising that in your dream, you just killed over 157 Nazis, along with the Nazi Officer's Drag Queen Tea Society. I suppose this could be bad.

"As you're walking along the pier at the Obligatory Pirate's Cove, you're accosted by a smarmy pirate. He doesn't seem to want to fight, though. He pulls you aside.

"So, yeah, I TOTALLY need your help," he says, winking. "It would just be GREAT if you would help me out, or whatever. I need one more judge for our annual Pirate Pageant. Do you think, if you're not too 'busy', you could 'judge' our contest? Just take a look at these three pirates and tell me who you think is the saltiest old salt to ever sail the eleven seas."

You take a look at the contestants. The first one is wearing eyeliner, for some reason, even though that's not something you generally find on a pirate ship. He has long, ratty hair, and constantly sways back and forth, like his legs never figured out he's not on a ship anymore. "Hey there, mate," he says. "The name's Jack Robinson. If you could see your way clear to voting for me, I'm sure I could reward you somehow, faster than you can say 'me'... savvy?"

The second pirate has a hook for one hand and a peg leg. He's dressed in a bright red uniform and wears a long black wig. He's wearing even more makeup than Jack Robinson. "You should definitely vote for me. Definitely. My name's Sergeant Hook, but I'm definitely up for a promotion. I'm an excellent pirate. If you vote for me, I'll give you something nice. Definitely nice. K-mart sucks."

The final pirate looks far too dashing to be a real pirate -- he looks like one of those kids who hang out at the mall pretending to be pirates. He has perfectly coiffed hair, a suave all-black outfit, and a mask tied over his eyes. "I am The Dread Pirate Bob," he says. "I am entirely sure that you will vote for me, because unlike other pirates, I can speak with an English accent. Plus, MY reward for your vote will be much better than these other two rogues.""
